I don't know that there were any big changes in models ranging from 96-98, but in general it will be better to get a newer E36 with mileage as good as you can find and preferably with service records. Bought a 328i 5MT right before the school year started and would come home to work on the car about every 3 weeks or so.

Certainly good cars in their own right (particularly after a full Dinan3 upgrade for the 335) but still lacking the panache and handling of the E36. The E36 was the car, after all, that was crowned as the "Best Handling car at any price" by Car and Driver magazine in 1997.
Really, the E36 is the perfect enthusiast car. It blends modern technology with old-school analog fun for a perfect combination of fun and convenience. This most certainly accounts for why they have recently begun to climb in value.
